Mirrors Garden Club Celebrates with Garden-to-Table Experience
The Mirrors Programme hosted a successful Garden-to-Table Experience at the Butterfield & Vallis Conference Centre at Bermuda College, highlighting the growth, learning and achievements of young participants in its Field of Learning Garden Club.
Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, the Hon. Tinee Furbert, JP, MP, stated, “Programmes like the Garden Club demonstrate the value of hands-on learning in shaping confident, capable young people. By engaging in activities that promote sustainability, teamwork and responsibility, our young people are gaining skills that will serve them well into the future while contributing to a more resilient Bermuda.”
Through a collaborative partnership with Bermuda College instructor Dr Tineika Eve and her students and sponsored by Maxcem Bermuda Ltd., five young people who successfully completed Term 2 of the programme prepared and served a meal to their parents and invited guests. The dishes featured produce that the students had planted, nurtured and harvested over the course of the term.
The Garden Club, facilitated by Lead Gardener Nelson Bascome, provides hands-on learning experiences that connect young people to food systems, sustainability and personal responsibility.
Kennette Robinson, Assistant Director of the Department of Child and Family Services, commended the students and encouraged them to apply their skills beyond the programme, highlighting the importance of sustainability and everyday practice.
Letitia Washington, Prevention Services Coordinator at Mirrors, noted the organisation’s commitment to offering programmes that expose young people to new experiences, helping them build confidence and explore future possibilities.
Nelson Bascome also thanked students and parents for their consistent engagement, reporting a strong harvest that included kale, Bermuda onions and broccoli, with participants contributing a total of 96.5 hours in the garden.
The Garden-to-Table Experience marks the culmination of months of learning, reinforcing the value of experiential education and community partnership in youth development. Term 3 of the Field of Learning Garden Club is scheduled to begin on 27 April 2026.
